Educational Q&A

The verse highlights a moral-psychological contrast in war: disciplined leadership supported by allies versus the vulnerability of isolation. In the Mahābhārata’s ethical frame, power in battle is not merely personal valor but also the cohesion of one’s forces and the consequences of choices that can leave a ruler unsupported.

Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Dhṛṣṭadyumna is firmly positioned on the battlefield with his surrounding supporters, while Duryodhana, by contrast, has become solitary—suggesting a turning point where the Kaurava king is left without adequate backing.
