Educational Q&A

The verse underscores the breadth of royal conquest and the testing of strength against even fearsome, socially liminal opponents; it also reflects how epic narrative classifies peoples by lineage to heighten the sense of challenge and achievement.

In Sahadeva’s report of campaigns and victories connected with the wider political consolidation around the Pāṇḍavas, he notes that the conqueror also defeated the group called the Kālamukhas, described as warriors of mixed human–Rākṣasa origin.
