प्रशंसन्तो<र्जुनं केचित् केचित् कर्ण महारथा: । व्यद्रवन्त दिशो भीता: कुरव: कुरुसत्तम,कुरुश्रेष्ठ! कौरव-महारथियोंमेंसे कुछ लोग अर्जुनकी प्रशंसा करते थे और कुछ कर्णकी। वे सब-के-सब भयभीत होकर चारों दिशाओंमें भाग खड़े हुए
sañjaya uvāca | praśaṃsanto 'rjunaṃ kecit kecit karṇa-mahārathāḥ | vyadravanta diśo bhītāḥ kuravaḥ kuru-sattama kuru-śreṣṭha ||
Sañjaya nói: Trong hàng chiến binh Kuru, có kẻ tán dương Arjuna, có kẻ tán dương Karṇa—bậc đại xa chiến. Nhưng toàn thể người Kuru, bị nỗi sợ hãi chụp lấy, đã tan tác chạy về bốn phương—hỡi bậc tối thượng trong dòng Kuru, hỡi người ưu tú nhất của Kuru! Cảnh ấy cho thấy giữa cuộc đụng độ của các dũng tướng, lời tung hô phe phái nhường chỗ cho sự thật đạo lý và tâm lý của chiến tranh: nỗi sợ có thể làm rã đội ngũ ngay cả của một đạo quân lừng danh.
