Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how adharma-driven ambition can overturn natural duties and reverence: even Bhīṣma, the venerable elder and protector of the Kuru line, becomes a target amid the chaos of war. It points to the ethical tragedy of internecine conflict, where kinship and respect are subordinated to victory.

Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the Kaurava princes, with Duryodhana at their head, formed around Bhīṣma on the battlefield and fought alongside the Pāṇḍavas in the ongoing Kurukṣetra war, indicating a tactical encirclement and intense engagement.
