ततः प्रयात: सहसा भीष्म: शान्तनवोडर्जुनम् | रणे भारतमायान्तमाससाद महाबल:,तदनन्तर शान्तनुनन्दन भीष्म युद्धभूमिमें सहसा अर्जुनके सामने गये। भरतवंशी भीष्मको आते देख महाबली अर्जुन उनके पास जा पहुँचे
tataḥ prayātaḥ sahasā bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo 'rjunam | raṇe bhāratam āyāntam āsasāda mahābalaḥ ||
Sañjaya nói: “Rồi Bhīṣma, con của Śāntanu, bất ngờ xông lên và đối diện Arjuna trên chiến địa. Thấy Bhīṣma tiến đến giữa cơn binh lửa, Arjuna hùng mạnh cũng bước tới nghênh chiến. Cảnh ấy đặt ra một căng thẳng đạo lý nghiêm trọng: bậc trưởng thượng đáng kính và người thân yêu đứng ở hai chiến tuyến, nhưng mỗi người vẫn tiến theo lời thệ và bổn phận của mình trong luật lệ khắc nghiệt của chiến tranh.”
