भीष्मधनंजयद्वैरथम्
Bhīṣma–Dhanaṃjaya Duel and the Opening Clash
संजय उवाच (तावका: पाण्डवै: सार्थ यथायुध्यन्त तच्छूणु ।) समं॑ व्यूढेष्वनीकेषु संनद्धरुचिरध्वजम् । अपारमिव संदृश्य सागरप्रतिमं बलम्,संजयने कहा--राजन्! आपके पुत्रोंने पाण्डवोंके साथ जिस प्रकार युद्ध किया, वह बताता हूँ, सुनिये। जब सब सेनाओंकी व्यूह-रचना हो गयी, तब समस्त सेना एक होकर एक अपार महासागरके समान प्रतीत होने लगी। उसमें सब ओर रथ आदिमें आबद्ध सुन्दर ध्वजा फहराती दिखायी देती थी। उसे देखकर सैनिकोंके बीचमें खड़ा हुआ आपका पुत्र दुर्योधन आपके सभी योद्धाओंसे इस प्रकार बोला--“कवचधारी वीरो! युद्ध आरम्भ करो”
sañjaya uvāca | tāvakāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhaṃ yathāyudhyanta tac chṛṇu | samaṃ vyūḍheṣv anīkeṣu saṃnaddha-rucira-dhvajam | apāram iva saṃdṛśya sāgara-pratimaṃ balam |
Sañjaya nói: “Xin nghe đây, ta sẽ kể cách các con của ngài đã giao chiến cùng các Pāṇḍava. Khi các đội hình của hai đạo quân đã bày xong, toàn quân—chiến sĩ mặc giáp, cờ xí rực rỡ phấp phới—trông như một đại dương mênh mông không bờ bến. Thấy lực lượng tựa biển ấy đã dàn ra cho chiến trận, Duryodhana đứng giữa quân sĩ, thúc giục các dũng sĩ mặc giáp hãy bắt đầu cuộc chiến.”
