The verse highlights how dharma in war is complicated by vows and moral constraints: Bhīṣma’s personal code affects how others engage him, and the Pāṇḍavas adopt a strategy that exploits those constraints. It invites reflection on the tension between righteous ends and ethically ambiguous means in a dharmic conflict.
Sanjaya reports to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the Pāṇḍavas, with Śikhaṇḍin positioned at the front, encircle Bhīṣma on the battlefield and shower him with arrows, initiating the decisive phase that leads toward Bhīṣma’s incapacitation.
