Ulūpī’s Disclosure and the Saṃjīvana-Maṇi: Arjuna’s Restoration

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights dharmic self-restraint: a vowed discipline (dīkṣā) is to be protected through consistent conduct, even when social convenience or hospitality invites relaxation. Ethical integrity is shown by refusing actions that would compromise the vow.

Arjuna addresses a respected person (called “mighty-armed” and “wide-eyed”) and explains that he is currently under a consecratory observance connected with his mission; therefore he will not enter the other’s city until the observance is completed.
