Even after catastrophic conflict, dharmic governance is marked by restraint and the capacity to maintain respectful, affectionate relations—so that society does not witness factional hostility in the ruler’s conduct toward elders and former adversaries.
At the opening of this chapter in the Āśramavāsika Parva, the narrator notes that the kingdom’s people observed no diminution in the cordial relationship between King Yudhiṣṭhira and Dhṛtarāṣṭra, setting the ethical tone for the events leading to Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Gāndhārī’s move toward forest life.
