Attempt to Dissuade Kuntī; Commencement of Forest Residence
The verse underscores the dharmic importance of correctly recognizing persons through lineage and lawful relationships (wifehood, parentage). In the Ashramavāsika setting, such identification also serves remembrance and accountability—connecting individuals to the moral and political histories of their houses.
Sanjaya is identifying a seated woman by describing her appearance and then stating her family and marital ties: she is the daughter of Jarāsandha, ruler of Magadha, and the wife of Sahadeva, the younger son of Mādrī.
