Adhyāya 71: Kaca and the Saṃjīvanī-vidyā

दर्शनादेव हि शुभे त्वया मेडपहतं मन: । इच्छामि त्वामहं ज्ञातुं तन्ममाचक्ष्य शोभने,'शुभे! तुमने दर्शनमात्रसे मेरे मनको हर लिया है। कल्याणि! मैं तुम्हारा परिचय जानना चाहता हूँ, अतः मुझे सब कुछ ठीक-ठीक बताओ
darśanād eva hi śubhe tvayā meḍapahataṃ manaḥ | icchāmi tvām ahaṃ jñātuṃ tan mamācakṣva śobhane ||
“Hỡi người cát tường, chỉ vừa thấy nàng thôi lòng ta đã bị cuốn đi. Hỡi người rạng ngời, ta muốn biết nàng là ai; vậy xin hãy nói rõ cho ta sự thật về thân thế của nàng.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the ethical movement from mere attraction to responsible inquiry: instead of acting impulsively, the speaker seeks clear knowledge of the other person’s identity and circumstances, implying that desire should be guided by discernment and truthful communication.
In the course of the Adi Parva narration, the speaker (framed as Vaiśampāyana’s report) voices immediate fascination upon seeing an auspicious woman and asks her to disclose her identity and details plainly.
