Ādi Parva, Adhyāya 47 — Janamejaya’s Sarpa-satra: Vow, Preparation, and the Onset of the Serpent Offering
अह्वः परिक्षये ब्रह्मूंस्तत: साचिन्तयत् तदा । वासुकेर्भगिनी भीता धर्मलोपान्मनस्विनी,ब्रह्म! दिन समाप्त होने ही वाला था। अतः वासुकिकी मनस्विनी बहिन जरत्कारु अपने पतिके धर्मलोपसे भयभीत हो उस समय इस प्रकार सोचने लगी--“इस समय पतिको जगाना मेरे लिये अच्छा (धर्मानुकूल) होगा या नहीं? मेरे धर्मात्मा पतिका स्वभाव बड़ा दुःखद है। मैं कैसा बर्ताव करूँ, जिससे उनकी दृष्टिमें अपराधिनी न बनूँ
Ahnāḥ parikṣaye brāhmāṁs tataḥ sā cintayat tadā | Vāsuker bhaginī bhītā dharmalopān manasvinī ||
Khi ngày sắp tàn, nàng suy ngẫm. Em gái của Vāsuki—tâm chí cao thượng nhưng lo sợ chồng mình sẽ lỡ bổn phận—bắt đầu cân nhắc: “Lúc này ta có nên đánh thức phu quân hay không? Phu quân ta vốn chính trực, nhưng tính tình nghiêm khắc và u uẩn; ta phải xử sự thế nào để không bị xem là có lỗi trong mắt người?”
