Educational Q&A

The verse emphasizes responsibility toward one’s community and lineage: a dharmic resolution to collective suffering (a curse on the Nāgas) arises through rightful relationships and the birth of a figure destined to restore balance and protect kin.

Śeṣa identifies Jaratkāru as Vāsuki’s sister and foretells that she will bear a son who will free the serpent clan from a curse—foreshadowing the birth of the rescuer who will later avert the Nāgas’ destruction.
