Ādi Parva, Adhyāya 103 — Dhṛtarāṣṭra–Gāndhārī Vivāha: Proposal, Consent, and the Vow
ता: सर्वगुणसम्पन्ना भ्राता भ्रात्रे यवीयसे । भीष्मो विचित्रवीर्याय प्रददौ विक्रमाहता:,भाई भीष्मने अपने पराक्रमद्वारा हरकर लायी हुई उन सर्वसदगुणसम्पन्न कन््याओंको अपने छोटे भाई विचित्रवीर्यके हाथमें दे दिया
tāḥ sarvaguṇasampannā bhrātā bhrātre yavīyase | bhīṣmo vicitravīryāya pradadau vikramāhatāḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana nói: Những thiếu nữ ấy, đầy đủ mọi đức hạnh cao quý—những người mà Bhīṣma đã đoạt được bằng chính dũng lực của mình—với tư cách người anh cả, Bhīṣma đã trao họ cho em trai Vicitravīrya, đặt họ dưới sự che chở của chàng như những tân nương.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse foregrounds Bhīṣma’s commitment to dynastic responsibility: as the elder, he acts to secure his younger brother’s marriage and the continuity of the Kuru line. At the same time, it invites ethical reflection on the tension between royal duty and the personal agency of the women involved.
After winning the maidens through his valor, Bhīṣma formally gives them to his younger brother Vicitravīrya as brides, arranging the marriage as part of statecraft and succession planning.
