The Determination of Śiva as the Meaning of Praṇava
na samprasūyate yo vai kutaścana kadācana | yasminna bhāsate vidyunna na sūryo na candramāḥ
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Īśāna
Role: teaching
It points to Śiva as Pati—the unborn, unconditioned Reality—who is not illuminated by worldly lights, but is the ground of all illumination; realizing this transcendence leads the soul (paśu) toward liberation from pāśa (bondage).
The Liṅga symbolizes the formless, unborn Śiva described here; Saguna worship (form, mantra, ritual) becomes a doorway to contemplate and realize the same Nirguna Lord who is beyond sun, moon, and lightning.
Meditate on Śiva as self-luminous consciousness while repeating the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”; support it with Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and Rudrākṣa as aids to steady remembrance of the unborn Pati.
