Mantra 1
पवस्व मधुमत्तम इन्द्राय सोम क्रतुवित्तमो मदः महि द्युक्षतमो मदः
Be purified, O Soma, most sweet, for Indra; thou art the exhilaration most skilled in sacred rite, the great, the most resplendent exhilaration.
Mantra 2
अभि द्युम्नं बृहद्यश इषस्पते दिदीहि देव देवयुम् वि कोशं मध्यमं युव
Shine forth unto (us with) splendour, O Soma of great renown, lord of nourishment; O god, godward-leading, do thou make manifest the middle vessel, thou vigorous one.
Mantra 3
आ सोता परि षिञ्चताश्वं न स्तोममप्तुरं रजस्तुरम् वनप्रक्षमुदप्रुतम्
Come, O pressers, pour it forth all around—like a steed—(even) the hymn of praise, unobstructed, swift through the regions, cleansed by the wood, purified by the waters.
Mantra 4
एतमु त्यं मदच्युतं सहस्रधारं वृषभं दिवोदुहम् विश्वा वसूनि बिभ्रतम्
This, verily, that Soma, distilling exhilaration, thousand-streamed, the potent bull, milking heaven, bearing all riches (to the rite),—(him) (we celebrate).
Mantra 5
स सुन्वे यो वसूनां यो रायामानेता य इडानाम् सोमो यः सुक्षितीनाम्
He, the Soma, is for the presser the (giver) of wealths; he is the bringer of riches; he is (the fulfiller) of the iḍā-invocations; he is (the bestower) of good habitations.
Mantra 6
त्वं ह्या3ङ्ग दैव्या पवमान जनिमानि द्युमत्तमः अमृतत्वाय घोषयन्
For thou, verily, O Pavamāna, art most splendid among divine manifestations, sounding forth for (the attainment of) immortality.
Mantra 7
एष स्य धारया सुतो ऽव्यो वारेभिः पवते मदिन्तमः क्रीडन्नूर्मिरपामिव
This Soma, pressed forth, is purified in a stream through the woollen (filter), with the waters; most exhilarating, he sports like a wave of the waters.
Mantra 8
य उस्रिया अपि या अन्तरश्मनि निर्गा अकृन्तदोजसा अभि व्रजं तत्निषे गव्यमश्व्यं वर्मीव धृष्णवा रुज ॐ वर्मीव धृष्णवा रुज
Thou who didst bring forth the ruddy kine that were within the stone, having cleft (it) by thy strength; thou hast spread (wealth) unto the stall, rich in cattle and in horses: break (it) open boldly, as (one breaks) an earth-mound; Oṃ—break (it) open boldly, as an earth-mound.
It praises Soma as he is purified (pavamāna): the sweetest, most radiant exhilarant whose correct preparation makes the sacrifice effective and brings both divine support (for Indra) and human prosperity.
Soma is the primary subject, but he is purified “for Indra” as the intended recipient of the exhilarating draught; Indra’s empowerment signifies the rite’s success and the flow of strength and benefits to the sacrificer.
In ritual reading it points to the pressing stones (adri) and the release of Soma-juice likened to freeing cows; symbolically it expresses Soma’s power to break obstructions and to open the enclosure of wealth and boons for the yajamāna.
