Hanuman’s Post-Conflagration Self-Examination and Assurance of Sita’s Safety
vinaṣṭā jānakī nūnaṃ na hy adagdhaḥ pradṛśyate |
laṅkāyāṃ kaścid uddeśaḥ sarvā bhasmīkṛtā purī ||
'Surely Janaki has perished in Lanka, for not even a little place is left unburnt. The entire city is reduced to ashes.
Non-harm and moral responsibility: even justified aggression becomes adharma if it endangers the innocent; Hanumān’s fear reflects this ethical awareness.
Surveying the city-wide blaze, Hanumān momentarily concludes that Sītā may have been consumed by the fire.
Empathy and accountability: his first concern is not victory but Sītā’s safety.
