Bhīṣma underscores the inevitability of consequences once violence is set in motion: when war begins, some side must experience gain and the other loss—victory and defeat are unavoidable outcomes. The statement functions as a sober ethical reminder that initiating conflict necessarily entails real, irreversible results.
Bhīṣma is speaking in a reflective, advisory tone about the nature of battle. He frames warfare as a domain where outcomes inevitably fall upon one party or the other, emphasizing that this is confirmed by experience and not a matter of speculation.
