Duryodhana’s Reassurance and Force-Praise to Dhritarashtra
na te sthāsyanti samaye pāṇḍavā iti me matiḥ | samucchedaṃ hi naḥ kṛtsnaṃ vāsudevaś cikīrṣati ||
The verse highlights how fear and mistrust distort ethical judgment: Duryodhana assumes the Pāṇḍavas will break the agreed terms and interprets Kṛṣṇa’s involvement as hostile intent. It illustrates the moral danger of projecting one’s own insecurity onto others, which hardens positions and accelerates conflict.
In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war negotiations, Duryodhana voices his suspicion that the Pāṇḍavas will not adhere to the stipulated time/compact and claims that Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) aims at the Kauravas’ total ruin—revealing Duryodhana’s defensive mindset as diplomacy moves toward war.
