Amba-ākhyāna prologue
जयन्तश्नामितौजाश्न सत्यजिच्च महारथ: । महारथा महात्मान: सर्वे पाउ्चालसत्तमा:
jayantaś cāmitaujāś ca satyajic ca mahārathaḥ | mahārathā mahātmānaḥ sarve pāñcālasattamāḥ ||
جَیَنت، اَمِتَوجا اور مہارَتھی سَتیَجِت—یہ سب بلند روح، عظیم قوت والے مہارَتھی ہیں؛ پانچالوں میں برگزیدہ۔
भीष्म उवाच
The verse highlights discernment in leadership: before war, one must recognize the true strength of opponents and allies—not only in numbers but in proven prowess and nobility (mahāratha, mahātmā). Such appraisal frames the ethical gravity of conflict and the responsibility of eminent warriors.
In Udyoga Parva’s preparations for the Kurukṣetra war, Bhīṣma is enumerating notable warriors. Here he names Jayanta, Amitaujā, and Satyajit as foremost Pāñcāla fighters, classifying them as mahārathas and emphasizing their distinguished status.
