Educational Q&A

The verse highlights a graded ethic of counsel and statecraft: begin with sāman—gentle, peace-seeking persuasion. If a leader refuses to heed conciliatory advice, the situation may shift toward harsher political measures (here, bheda—creating divisions) to prevent a single-minded march into adharma and collective ruin.

Vāyu reports that Duryodhana disregarded his soothing, conciliatory words. In response, Vāyu says he assembled the kings and attempted to create dissension among them—an effort to weaken unified support for Duryodhana’s obstinate course and to alter the political balance.
