Dāna ethics, lawful wealth, and settling obligations

Educational Q&A

Grave wrongdoing (brahma-hatyā) is not merely a private burden; it can attach to the agent who commits a harmful act, especially when done in delusion and at ritually charged times. The passage frames moral causality: responsibility follows the doer, and divine law provides a mechanism for the transfer/attachment of sin based on action and intent.

Bhīṣma (speaking on behalf of afflicted beings) appeals to a supreme lord, saying they already endure many hardships and will accept even the burden of brahma-hatyā if commanded, but asks for a way to be freed from it. Brahmā responds with a rule: at festival-times, whoever cuts or pierces them in delusion will have that brahma-hatyā follow and attach to him.
