Royal Duty: Protection, Penal Policy, and the Hayagrīva Exemplum

na kālato mriyate jāyate vā na kālato vyāharate ca bālaḥ | na kālato yauvanam abhyupaiti na kālato rohati bījam uptam ||

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches the sovereignty of kāla (time): birth, death, speech, maturation, and growth occur only when their proper time arrives. Ethically, it encourages patience, acceptance, and steadiness rather than anxiety over outcomes that cannot be forced.

In the didactic setting of Śānti Parva, Vyāsa delivers an instruction emphasizing that life-events unfold according to time’s order. He illustrates this with everyday examples—child development, the onset of youth, and a seed’s sprouting—to ground a moral lesson in observable nature.
