Adhyāya 249 — Mṛtyu-prādurbhāvaḥ (The Manifestation of Death) / Restraint of Tejas and Ordered Saṃhāra
ज्ञानदीपेन दीप्तेन पश्यत्यात्मानमात्मनि । दृष्टवा त्वमात्मना55त्मानं निरात्मा भव सर्ववित्,पुरुष प्रज्वलित ज्ञानमय प्रदीपके द्वारा अपनेमें ही परमात्माका दर्शन करता है; इसी प्रकार तुम भी आत्माद्वारा परमात्माका साक्षात्कार करके सर्वज्ञ और स्वाभिमानसे रहित हो जाओ
jñānadīpena dīptena paśyaty ātmānam ātmani | dṛṣṭvā tvam ātmanā ātmānaṃ nirātmā bhava sarvavit ||
روشنِ علم کے چراغ سے انسان اپنے ہی اندر، آتما میں آتما کا دیدار کرتا ہے۔ اسی طرح تم بھی آتما کے ذریعے آتما کا ساکشاتکار کر کے سَروِت (ہمہ دان) بنو اور اَہنکار سے پاک ہو جاؤ، اے پُرُش۔
व्यास उवाच
True realization arises when knowledge becomes an inner light: by that illumination one directly perceives the Self within oneself. The ethical outcome is humility and egolessness—dropping self-assertion—along with comprehensive understanding (sarvavit) grounded in inner realization rather than mere learning.
In Śānti Parva’s instruction on peace and liberation, Vyāsa addresses the listener as ‘Puruṣa’ and urges an inward turn: using the ‘lamp of knowledge’ to see the Self, and then to live as one freed from egoic identity, embodying the calm, all-comprehending vision praised in this section.
