Vānaprastha-vṛtti and the Transition toward the Fourth Āśrama (वानप्रस्थवृत्तिः चतुर्थाश्रमोपक्रमश्च)
आक्रुष्टस्ताडितश्वैव मैत्रेण ध्याति नाशुभम् । वाग्दण्डकर्ममनसां त्रयाणां च निवर्तक:
ākruṣṭas tāḍitaś caiva maitreṇa dhyāti nāśubham | vāg-daṇḍa-karma-manasāṃ trayāṇāṃ ca nivartakaḥ ||
جو گالی سن کر اور مار کھا کر بھی دوستی کے بھاؤ سے اَشُبھ کا خیال نہیں کرتا، وہی زبان، عمل (دَند) اور من—ان تینوں کو ضرر سے روک کر واپس موڑ دیتا ہے۔
व्यास उवाच
Cultivate maitri (friendliness) so that even under provocation—insult or injury—you do not generate harmful thoughts, and you actively restrain the three channels of misconduct: speech, bodily action, and mind.
Vyāsa states a general dharma-teaching in the Śānti Parva: the truly disciplined person remains benevolent despite abuse and violence, and prevents retaliation by checking mind, speech, and action.
