Adhyāya 222 — ब्रह्मस्थानप्राप्ति: मोक्षधर्मे समत्वव्रतम्

Attaining the Brahman-Station: The Vow of Equanimity in Mokṣadharma

अथ ते लक्ष्यते बुद्धि: समा बालजनैरिह । आत्मानं मन्यमान: सन्‌ श्रेय: किमिह मन्यसे,“आपकी बुद्धि बालकोंके समान राग-द्वेषसे रहित दिखायी देती है। आप आत्माका अनुभव करते हैं, इसीलिये आपकी ऐसी स्थिति है; अतः मैं पूछता हूँ कि इस जगत्‌में आप किसको आत्मज्ञानका सर्वश्रेष्ठ साधन मानते हैं?

atha te lakṣyate buddhiḥ samā bālajanair iha | ātmānaṃ manyamānaḥ san śreyaḥ kim iha manyase ||

بھیشم نے کہا—یہاں تمہاری عقل بچوں کی سی چنچل نہیں؛ وہ ہموار اور غیر جانب دار دکھائی دیتی ہے—رغبت و نفرت کے جھولوں سے آزاد۔ تم آتما کے شعور میں قائم ہو، اسی لیے تمہاری یہ حالت ہے۔ لہٰذا میں پوچھتا ہوں: اس دنیا میں آتما-گیان اور پرم شریَہ کے لیے تم کس کو سب سے بہترین وسیلہ سمجھتے ہو؟

Equanimity—freedom from rāga (attachment) and dveṣa (aversion)—is presented as a visible sign of Self-abidance. Bhishma frames a dharmic inquiry: among worldly options, which discipline or means most effectively leads to ātmājñāna (knowledge of the Self) and śreyas (the highest good).

In the Shanti Parva’s instruction-dialogue, Bhishma addresses a spiritually mature interlocutor whose calm, impartial intellect is evident.
