प्रजाविसर्ग-तत्त्वनिर्णयः | Cosmogony of Elemental Emergence

परमात्माके साथ एकता तथा समता, सत्यभाषण, सदाचार, ब्रह्मनिष्ठा, दण्डका परित्याग (अहिंसा), सरलता तथा सब प्रकारके सकाम कर्मोंसे उपरति--इनके समान ब्राह्मणके लिये दूसरा कोई धन नहीं है ।। कि ते धनैर्बान्धवैर्वापि कि ते किं ते दारैब्राह्मण यो मरिष्यसि । आत्मानमन्विच्छ गुहां प्रविष्टं पितामहास्ते क्व गता: पिता च,ब्राह्मणदेव पिताजी! जब आप एक दिन मर ही जायूँगे तो आपको इस धनसे क्या लेना है अथवा भाई-बन्धुओंसे आपका क्‍या काम है तथा स्त्री आदिसे आपका कौन-सा प्रयोजन सिद्ध होनेवाला है? आप अपने हृदयरूपी गुफामें स्थित हुए परमात्माको खोजिये। सोचिये तो सही, आपके पिता और पितामह कहाँ चले गये?

paramātmake sārdham ekatā samatā ca, satyabhāṣaṇam, sadācāraḥ, brahmaniṣṭhā, daṇḍaparityāgaḥ (ahiṃsā), saralatā ca sarvaprakārasakāmakarmoparatiś ca—etaiḥ samaṃ brāhmaṇasya dvitīyaṃ dhanaṃ nāsti. kiṃ te dhanair bāndhavair vāpi? kiṃ te? kiṃ te dāraiḥ, brāhmaṇa, yo mariṣyasi? ātmānam anviccha guhāṃ praviṣṭaṃ; pitāmahās te kva gatāḥ pitā ca.

بھیشم نے کہا— پرماتما کے ساتھ یگانگت اور برابریِ نظر، سچ بولنا، نیک چال چلن، برہمن میں استقامت، سزا و جبر کا ترک (اہنسا)، سادگی، اور ہر طرح کے خواہش انگیز اعمال سے کنارہ کشی—برہمن کے لیے ان کے برابر کوئی اور دولت نہیں۔ اے برہمن! جب تمہیں ایک دن مرنا ہی ہے تو دولت سے کیا؟ رشتہ داروں سے کیا؟ بیوی اور گھر بار سے کیا حاصل ہوگا؟ دل کی غار میں داخل آتما کو تلاش کرو۔ سوچو—تمہارے باپ اور دادا پردادا کہاں چلے گئے؟

Educational Q&A

True ‘wealth’ for a brahmin is inner virtue and realization: unity and equanimity with the Supreme, truthfulness, ethical conduct, steadfastness in Brahman, non-violence, simplicity, and withdrawal from desire-driven actions. External possessions and relationships cannot accompany one at death; therefore one should pursue Self-inquiry and inner realization.

In Shanti Parva, Bhishma instructs on dharma and the path of inner good. Here he addresses a brahmin (as a representative seeker), challenging attachment to wealth, kin, and spouse by reminding him of inevitable death and the fate of ancestors, and urging him to seek the indwelling Self in the ‘cave’ of the heart.
