Abandoning one’s own brother in distress is a violation of dharma; such betrayal invites moral and social consequences, here expressed through the sage’s śāpa (curse), emphasizing accountability for adharma.
Trita’s two brothers leave him behind (as the broader episode implies, in a dire situation such as a well), return home, and Trita—described as an exemplary brāhmaṇa—responds by cursing them for their wrongdoing.
