The verse highlights the kṣatriya ethic of measuring and meeting martial responsibility: a warrior is urged to act according to proven capability, standing as an equal to renowned champions and therefore taking on the duty of checking a formidable opponent in the larger cause of the battle.
In the midst of the Karṇa Parva fighting, Arjuna is portrayed as advancing aggressively. The speaker addresses a warrior on the opposing side, asserting that he matches the legendary fighters Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Aśvatthāmā, and Kṛpa, and commands him to stop Arjuna’s onrush in the great battle.
