adya karṇasya cakrāś ca kravyādāśva pṛthagvidhāḥ
The verse underscores the grim moral atmosphere of war: when righteous restraint collapses, the battlefield naturally fills with instruments of killing and the scavengers that follow. It functions as a reminder of war’s ethical cost and the inevitability of suffering once violence is unleashed.
Sañjaya, reporting to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, describes the battlefield scene around Karṇa’s fighting—evoking Karṇa’s weapons and the presence of carrion-eaters of many kinds, a conventional Mahābhārata motif signaling heavy slaughter and ominous momentum in the battle.
