Bhīmasena’s Roar and the First Clash
मानापमानयोस्तुल्यस्तुल्यो मित्रारिपक्षयो: । सर्वारम्भपरित्यागी4 गुणातीत: स उच्यते
mānāpamānayos tulyas tulyo mitrāripakṣayoḥ | sarvārambhaparityāgī guṇātītaḥ sa ucyate ||
جو عزّت و ذلّت میں یکساں رہے، دوست اور دشمن—دونوں کے فریق میں برابر ہو، اور ہر طرح کے خود ساختہ آغاز و اقدام کو ترک کر دے—وہی مرد گُناتیت کہلاتا ہے۔
अजुन उवाच
The verse defines the guṇātīta (one beyond the three guṇas) as a person of steady inner balance: unaffected by honor or dishonor, impartial between friend and enemy factions, and free from egoistic initiation of actions—renouncing possessive agency and attachment.
In the Bhīṣma Parva’s battlefield discourse, Arjuna is speaking while ethical instruction is being articulated amid the impending war; the verse characterizes the ideal of inner transcendence and non-partisanship even in a context charged with conflict and loyalty.
