This verse functions as a colophon, emphasizing the epic’s disciplined structure: events of war are not merely action but are framed through authoritative dialogue (Bhishma and Karna), reminding the reader that counsel, duty, and moral consequence accompany martial deeds.
Sanjaya signals the end of a chapter within Bhishma Parva, specifically in the subsection about Bhishma’s fall, noting that the chapter’s subject was the conversation between Bhishma and Karna; it is a formal closure marker rather than a new plot event.
