Shloka 53

धृतराष्ट्रस्य पाण्डवेषु प्रीति-वृत्तान्तः | Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Affectionate Disposition toward the Pāṇḍavas

इयं हि वसुसम्पूर्णा मही सागरमेखला । भवता विप्रहीणस्य न मे प्रीतिकरी भवेत्‌,आपके त्याग देनेपर यह धन-धान्यसे परिपूर्ण समुद्रसे घिरी हुई सारी पृथ्वीका राज्य भी मुझे प्रसन्न नहीं रख सकता

iyaṁ hi vasusampūrṇā mahī sāgaramekhalā | bhavatā viprahīṇasya na me prītikarī bhavet |

یُدھشٹھِر نے کہا— یہ زمین جو سمندر سے گھری اور دولت سے بھرپور ہے، اگر میں آپ سے محروم ہو جاؤں تو مجھے خوشی نہیں دے سکتی۔

Educational Q&A

Material abundance and political power do not guarantee inner contentment; without valued relationships and moral-spiritual companionship, even the whole earth’s sovereignty feels joyless. The verse highlights detachment from wealth and the primacy of human and ethical bonds over possessions.

In Āśramavāsika Parva, Yudhiṣṭhira is confronting the withdrawal of the elders into forest life. Speaking with grief and reverence, he declares that even an ocean-bounded, wealth-filled kingdom cannot please him if he is separated from the addressed person (bhavat), underscoring his reluctance to accept worldly rule without them.
