Educational Q&A

The verse links two virtues—charitable giving (especially of clothing) and fidelity to one’s lawful spouse—teaching that such conduct brings auspicious outcomes, symbolized by being well-clothed and well-presented.

In the Anushasana Parva, Bhishma continues instructing on dharma and the fruits of various gifts. Here he cites traditional testimony (“we have heard”) that donating garments, while living as a faithful householder, yields the merit of obtaining fine clothing and pleasing appearance.
