Educational Q&A

Persistent aggression toward living beings and the habitual creation of hatred are condemned as adharma; such a person’s character (śīla) and conduct (samācāra) lead to severe karmic retribution, described here as falling into niraya (hell).

Śrī Maheśvara is instructing about moral causality: he identifies a type of wrongdoer—one who harms creatures and provokes enmity—and states the consequence that follows from such sustained behavior.
