काम्येष्टयः प्रायश्चित्तानि च (TS 2.3)
TS 2.3 functions as a deployable catalogue of targeted rites (kāmyeṣṭi) and corrective rites (prāyaścitta) that can be inserted into the Srauta calendar as needed. The text organizes efficacy through deity-selection (Āditya, Varuṇa, Indra, Agni-Soma, Bṛhaspati, etc.), offering-forms (caru, puroḍāśa, multi-kapāla structures), and bandhu-logic that ties social order (viś/ rāṣṭra/ sajāta cohesion), bodily integrity (āyus, indriya, prāṇa), and cosmic stability (dhruva, budhna–agra movement) to ritual geometry. Several units explicitly encode “repair” semantics: restoring radiance, releasing bonds, re-stabilizing community alignment, and reconstituting vitality. In the Shrauta year, these modules serve as a technical toolkit for the Adhvaryu to address contingencies—loss of standing, obstruction, illness-signs, or social fragmentation—while maintaining continuity with the larger yajña-system through standardized implements, altar-space movements, and mantra-vidhi coupling.
Mantra 1
When it was new, it became fresh butter; when it flowed, it became melted butter; when it became firm, it became clarified butter. Thou art the breath of the Aśvins; may those whose breath thou art give thee—svāhā. Thou art the breath of Indra; may he whose breath thou art give thee—svāhā. Thou art the breath of Mitra and Varuṇa; may those whose breath thou art give thee—svāhā. Thou art the breath of all the gods.
Mantra 2
Mantra 3
Keith (1914) does not provide a single uniform rendering for every extended TS composite formula in all recensions/segmentations; a close Keith-style technical translation of the present passage is: “Let him set (thee) forth for living, for life. With Agni’s measure, for the Jagatī, with the track, with the vigour of the Agra-yana, let the god Savitar set thee forth for living, for life. Make this (one), O Agni, for life and for splendour. (Make) the dear seed, O Varuṇa, O Soma-king. As a mother, O Aditi, grant him shelter. May all the gods be such that old age is attained. Agni is possessed of life, he with the forest-lords is possessed of life; with that life I make thee possessed of life. Soma is possessed of life, he with the plants is possessed of life. The sacrifice is possessed of life, it with the fees (is) possessed of life. The sacred utterance is possessed of life; that with the Brahmans is possessed of life. The gods are possessed of life through immortality; the Fathers are possessed of life through svadhā; with that life I make thee possessed of life.”
