This verse treats lead or darbha as a prescribed ritual support/marker for the preta-state, helping structure the rite and sanctify the post-death procedure through traditional materials.
It reflects the Garuda Purana’s emphasis that, immediately after death, the being is addressed as a preta and is guided through specific ritual placements and mantras that are believed to aid order, protection, and transition in the liminal post-death phase.
If one follows tradition, perform rites under qualified guidance: use prescribed sacred materials (like darbha) and chant mantras with care, keeping the focus on reverence, discipline, and remembrance of Govinda.
