Post-cremation Ripening of Karma and the Principal Narakas
एष ते कथितस्तार्क्ष्य विनासः सर्वदेहिनम् / कथयामि पुनस्तेषां शरीरं च यथा भवेत्
eṣa te kathitastārkṣya vināsaḥ sarvadehinam / kathayāmi punasteṣāṃ śarīraṃ ca yathā bhavet
Lord Vishnu
Afterlife Stage: Yamaloka Journey
Concept: All embodied beings undergo dissolution; thereafter a different ‘body’ (subtle/other) is described—implying continuity of the jīva beyond gross death.
Vedantic Theme: Sūkṣma-śarīra continuity; saṃsāra as repeated embodiment; distinction between gross body’s end and jīva’s onward journey.
Application: Use the certainty of death to prioritize sādhana and ethical living; reflect on consequences beyond death to restrain harmful actions.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana Pretakalpa: subsequent verses on the preta-body and journey to Yama
This verse frames death as a universal destiny for all embodied beings and introduces the next teaching: what kind of body one has after death, a key theme in the Preta Kanda.
It marks a transition in the dialogue: after explaining the moment of death, Vishnu proceeds to explain the post-death embodiment—often understood as the preta or subtle-body phase that continues the soul’s journey.
Remembering the inevitability of death encourages dharmic living and mindful preparation, including learning the appropriate śrāddha and pinda-dāna duties taught in the Garuda Purana tradition.
