An Exposition of the Distinctions of Creation, Inert Matter, and the Lord
रुद्रे स्थितो रुद्रसंज्ञो न रुद्रस्तु हरिः स्वयम् / विष्णुरेव हरिः साक्षात्तावुभौन हरी स्मृतौ
rudre sthito rudrasaṃjño na rudrastu hariḥ svayam / viṣṇureva hariḥ sākṣāttāvubhauna harī smṛtau
Lord Vishnu (in dialogue to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Hari may abide in Rudra and thus be called ‘Rudra’ by association, yet Hari is not identical with Rudra; ‘Hari’ in the primary sense is Viṣṇu alone.
Vedantic Theme: Name-form discrimination (nāma-rūpa-viveka) and hierarchy of divinity: īśvara as supreme with delegated/indwelt forms.
Application: In worship and theology, keep the object of ultimate refuge (Viṣṇu/Hari) unconfused; honor Rudra without equating him as the same ‘Hari’ in the primary sense.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: vira
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 3.4.6 (Hari entering Rudra); Garuda Purana 3.4.8 (right knowledge leads to mokṣa); Garuda Purana 3.4.9 (warning of naraka for wrong identity-claims)
It defines ‘Hari’ as Vishnu in the primary, direct sense, while explaining that the title ‘Rudra’ can apply by indwelling association without equating identities.
It distinguishes designation from essence: one may be called ‘Rudra’ due to being situated in Rudra, but Hari in the strict sense is identified as Vishnu alone.
Use devotional names with discernment: honor divine forms, yet keep clarity about the text’s theological hierarchy when performing worship, vows, or recitations.
