Lord Vishnu (addressing Garuda, Vinata-putra)
Concept: Purāṇic taxonomy of divine manifestations/consorts; comparative ‘reckoning’ indicates graded cosmological status or enumerative doctrine.
Vedantic Theme: Nāma-rūpa plurality within an ordered cosmos; knowledge (jñāna) as right understanding of purāṇic categories (not ultimate non-dual resolution, but doctrinal clarity).
Application: Use scriptural lists as aids to remembrance and theological orientation; avoid pride in ‘rank’—treat hierarchy as symbolic of functions/guṇas rather than social superiority.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 3.28.9 (tri-rūpā/dvi-rūpā explanation); Garuda Purana 3.28.6 (Śrī as Lakṣmī-aṃśa)
The verse functions as a catalog entry in a genealogical/hierarchical listing, identifying specific divine consorts and placing them within a counted set associated with Viṣṇu.
Viṣṇu addresses Garuḍa directly (“khagendra”) and instructs him to ‘know’ a specific classification, reflecting the teaching-and-enumeration mode common in their dialogue.
Use it as a reference point for accurate recitation, study, and archival indexing of Puranic names and relationships—supporting correct lineage-based understanding in traditional readings.
