tīrthāṭanārthaṃ tu jagāma pitrā sākaṃ hareḥ prīṇanādyarthameva / ārādhayitvā brāhmaṇānviṣṇubhaktānādau gṛhe vastrasaṃbhūṣaṇādyaiḥ
Lord Vishnu (narrating to Garuda/Vinata-putra in the Garuda Purana dialogue frame)
Concept: Bhagavad-bhaktānāṃ pūjanam: honoring Viṣṇu devotees—especially brāhmaṇas—with gifts is itself worship and supports tīrtha-yātrā as sādhana.
Vedantic Theme: Sevā and dāna reduce possessiveness (mamatā) and purify the mind; devotion expressed through service to the Lord’s devotees (tadīya-sevā).
Application: Before major spiritual undertakings, practice hospitality and charity to sincere practitioners; prioritize support of teachers, caregivers, and communities of practice.
Primary Rasa: vira
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Type: home (gṛha) and pilgrimage routes
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: dāna-mahātmyas, tīrtha-yātrā merits, and honoring brāhmaṇas/Viṣṇu-bhaktas as auspicious conduct
This verse presents pilgrimage as a dharmic act undertaken to please Hari, and it links tirtha-yatra with preparatory merit-making through honoring Vishnu’s devotees.
It shows that the outer act (travel to sacred places) is meant to be rooted in inner intention—pleasing Hari—and supported by righteous conduct like honoring Brahmins and Vishnu-bhaktas with gifts.
Before undertaking religious travel or vows, cultivate devotion and ethics: serve sincere practitioners, give appropriate charity (clothes/necessities), and make the journey an offering rather than mere sightseeing.
