Pitris (ancestors), as quoted within the Vishnu–Garuda dialogue

Ritual Type: Parvana

Beneficiary: Pitr

Timing: At Śrāddha, specifically during brāhmaṇa-bhojana (while brāhmaṇas are eating).

Concept: Śrāddha efficacy is heightened by śravaṇa/pāṭha of the stotra in the presence of brāhmaṇas during bhojana; it becomes pitṛ-puṣṭi (nourishment/strength).

Vedantic Theme: Interdependence of anna (offering) and śabda (mantra) as vehicles of subtle benefit; dharma as compassionate continuity across generations.

Application: During Śrāddha, recite this text audibly in front of the brāhmaṇas as they eat; ensure it is heard as part of the rite.

Primary Rasa: karuna

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Type: ritual dining space

Related Themes: Garuda Purana: instructions to recite stotra during brāhmaṇa-bhojana in Śrāddha; Garuda Purana: pitṛ-puṣṭi/tṛpti through śravaṇa and feeding

FAQs

This verse states that a specific recitation should be made in the presence of brāhmaṇas while they eat during śrāddha, because hearing it is described as nourishing and strengthening for the Pitris.

Indirectly, it teaches that post-death welfare is supported through śrāddha rites—especially feeding brāhmaṇas and ritual recitation—by which the departed (Pitris) receive ‘puṣṭi’ (sustenance/strength).

When performing śrāddha, maintain ritual attentiveness: feed qualified recipients respectfully and include proper recitation/listening, treating it as an intentional offering for ancestral well-being.
