Primary Rasa: karuna

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Type: śrāddha-vedi/home altar or tīrtha setting

FAQs

This verse frames piṇḍa-dāna as an act of “uddharaṇa” (upliftment), specifically intended to help departed relatives—here, those of the maternal grandfather’s line—who are described as lacking “gati” (a secure onward course/refuge).

By stating that some departed beings have “no gati,” the verse implies a vulnerable post-death condition where ritual support from the living (piṇḍa offerings) is presented as a means to aid their onward passage and relief.

It encourages conscientious performance of śrāddha/piṇḍa offerings with inclusive remembrance—extending prayers and offerings even to neglected or unknown ancestors on the maternal side who may not otherwise receive ritual support.
