Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vinatā-putra)
Beneficiary: Pitr
Timing: After Phalgu snāna and within the Gayā śrāddha sequence; darśana as a culminating act.
Concept: Viṣṇu (Gadādhara) darśana, joined with tīrtha-snāna, consummates śrāddha merit and grants release from pitṛ-obligation.
Vedantic Theme: Īśvara-anugraha (divine grace) as the crown of karma; bhakti integrates and elevates ritual action.
Application: Combine śrāddha acts with Viṣṇu-upāsanā: bathe with purity of intent, seek Gadādhara’s darśana, and dedicate the rite’s fruit to the Pitṛs.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Type: tirtha
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.84.14 (piṇḍa at Phalgu); Garuda Purana 1.84.16 (benefit to ten ancestors/descendants)
This verse states that bathing at Phalgu Tirtha and having darśana of Lord Gadādhara makes one anṛṇa—free from debt to the Pitṛs—highlighting it as a powerful tīrtha practice connected with ancestral satisfaction.
Rather than describing the soul’s post-death route directly, the verse emphasizes a living person’s duty to the Pitṛs: tīrtha-bathing and Vishnu-darśana are presented as means to discharge pitṛ-ṛṇa, supporting ancestral well-being and spiritual order (dharma).
Maintain respect for ancestors through śrāddha/tarpaṇa and dharmic living; if undertaking pilgrimage, combine sacred bathing with sincere Vishnu worship as an act of gratitude and responsibility toward one’s lineage.
