Gayā-māhātmya: Gayāsura, Viṣṇu’s Establishment, and the Fruits of Śrāddha at Gayā
युष्माकं स्याद्वारिवहा नदी पाषाणपर्वतः / शप्तैस्तु प्रार्थितो ब्रह्मानुग्रहं कृतवान्प्रभुः
yuṣmākaṃ syādvārivahā nadī pāṣāṇaparvataḥ / śaptaistu prārthito brahmānugrahaṃ kṛtavānprabhuḥ
Lord Vishnu (in dialogue with Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Sincere entreaty by the righteous (ṛṣi-prārthanā) can mitigate harsh outcomes; divine grace restores balance without negating moral law.
Vedantic Theme: Īśvara-anugraha as the harmonizing factor alongside karma; śaraṇāgati (turning toward the Lord) as transformative.
Application: When consequences arise, seek reform and prayer rather than despair; rely on wise intercession/mentorship and commit to ethical correction.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Type: tirtha landscape (river and rocky hill)
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: recurring pattern of śāpa and śāpa-śamana through devotion and right conduct (general thematic parallel)
This verse highlights that even when conditions are fixed by fate or prior statements, sincere entreaty by great sages can invoke divine sanction—here framed as “Brahmā’s grace”—to restore auspicious order.
Indirectly: it emphasizes that cosmic arrangements affecting beings (including post-death landscapes and conditions described in Preta Kanda) are governed by divine law, yet can be moderated through higher intercession and grace.
Cultivate humility and prayerful recourse to dharmic means—seeking guidance from learned teachers and performing sincere supplication—rather than despairing when circumstances seem harsh or irreversible.
