Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)

Concept: Using Praṇava (Oṁ) as the decisive principle to pierce/transpose cosmic constructs and re-establish meditation on the supreme form.

Vedantic Theme: Oṁ as the gateway from vyāvahārika cosmology to paramārthika contemplation; breaking the ‘aṇḍa’ symbolizes cutting avidyā’s enclosure.

Application: In guided meditation: visualize a luminous cosmic sphere, then intone Oṁ to ‘open’ it into clear awareness; return attention to the previously described Viṣṇu-form as the stabilizing support.

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Type: cosmic interior (microcosm-macrocosm mapping)

Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.31.9-10 (previously described form); Garuda Purana 1.31.13 (subsequent ātma-pūjā)

FAQs

The verse presents Oṁ as the decisive spiritual power used to ‘split’ or transcend the cosmic enclosure (aṇḍa), indicating that Praṇava is a key aid for breaking limitation and entering higher contemplation.

It outlines a sequence: first visualize the cosmic aṇḍa, then mentally ‘pierce’ it with Oṁ, and finally contemplate the previously described divine form—showing a structured dhyāna method.

Use Oṁ-japa to steady attention, then practice visualization that moves from broad cosmic imagery to focused contemplation of a chosen sacred form—training the mind to transcend distraction and deepen devotion.
