Mantra-Nyāsa and Elemental Maṇḍalas: Nāga Invocation and Garuḍa–Bhairava Dhyāna for Protection
आग्नेये चापि कुलिकस्तक्षश्चैव महाब्जकौ / वायुमण्डलसंस्थौ च पञ्च भूतानि विन्यसेत्
āgneye cāpi kulikastakṣaścaiva mahābjakau / vāyumaṇḍalasaṃsthau ca pañca bhūtāni vinyaset
آگنیہ سمت میں کُلِک، تَکش اور مہابجک کو بھی قائم کرے؛ اور ہوا کے دائرے میں مستقر کر کے پانچ مہابھوتوں کا وِن्यास کرے۔
Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vinatā-putra)
Concept: Correct vinnyāsa/nyāsa: ordering space by elements (fire, air, etc.) to establish ritual efficacy and inner alignment.
Vedantic Theme: Upāsanā as structured cognition: the mind is trained by mapping elements and directions, preparing for subtler inquiry.
Application: During pūjā/nyāsa, visualize Kulika, Takṣa, Mahābjaka in the āgneya zone; then consciously place pañca-bhūtas (pṛthvī-āpas-tejas-vāyu-ākāśa) in their loci within body/mandala to stabilize attention.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: vira
Type: directional quarter and elemental sphere
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.197.12–15: progressive installation—nāgas by realms, then by quarter, then finger/body nyāsa
This verse presents a ritual-cosmological mapping where the five elements are deliberately “placed” or contemplated in their proper spheres, aligning the rite with the universe’s elemental order.
Elemental arrangement is a common Garuda Purana framework for understanding how embodied existence is constituted and ritually harmonized; such mapping supports rites that address the body’s elemental basis and its transition after death.
Use the verse as a contemplative guide: during prayer or rite, reflect on the five elements in their proper domains (fire/air, etc.) to cultivate order, restraint, and reverence for the body and nature.
