Anupāna and the Doṣa-Effects of Foods, Waters, Dairy, Oils, and Preparations
मसूरो मधुरः शीव संग्रही कफपित्तहा / तद्वत्सर्वगुणाढ्यश्च कलायश्चातिवातलः
masūro madhuraḥ śīva saṃgrahī kaphapittahā / tadvatsarvaguṇāḍhyaśca kalāyaścātivātalaḥ
Lord Vishnu (in dialogue to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Dosha: Vata/Pitta/Kapha
Concept: Sattvic regulation of diet through knowledge of rasa-guṇa-vīrya to maintain harmony of doṣas.
Vedantic Theme: Yukta-āhāra as support for clarity (sattva) and steadiness of mind.
Application: Use masūra for kapha-pitta pacification and binding effect; treat kalāya as generally beneficial but avoid excess or counterbalance in vāta constitutions with unctuous/warming accompaniments.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.169 (legumes/grains guṇa-doṣa effects)
This verse shows that the Garuda Purana also preserves practical dharmic living through Ayurveda-like guidance, classifying foods by their effects on the doṣas (kapha, pitta, vāta).
Indirectly: it emphasizes bodily regulation through proper diet, supporting clarity and steadiness needed for dharma and rites—foundational for a disciplined life that the Purana links to spiritual outcomes.
Use masūra with awareness of its binding nature, and balance kalāya (pea) with vāta-pacifying preparation (warmth, fats, spices) if prone to dryness, gas, or anxiety.
