आवरणपूजावर्णनम् (Āvaraṇa-pūjā-varṇanam) — Description of Enclosure/Layered Worship
Suta Goswami (narrating the Kailasa teachings to the sages, conveying a liturgical confession within Shiva-worship procedure)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Significance: Frames pūjā as inner rectification: seated worship with nāmāṣṭaka and moral self-audit (good/bad karma) offered for purification—typical of Śaiva Siddhānta stress on grace removing pāśa (bondage).
Type: stotra
Role: teaching
It teaches Shaiva surrender: after worshipping Shiva with devotion, the seeker places all deeds—virtuous or faulty—before Pati (Shiva), seeking purification through His grace rather than egoic self-justification.
The verse fits Saguna upasana: seated properly and performing archana with Shiva’s names, the devotee approaches the Linga/Deva as the compassionate Lord who receives offerings and absolves impurities, leading the soul toward higher realization.
Sit in an āsana, perform Shiva-archana using an eight-name hymn (nāmāṣṭaka), and conclude with a confessional surrender—mentally offering all actions to Shiva as a purifying act (bhakti with prayāścitta-bhāva).
