Arjuna’s Self-Identification and the Ten Names
Uttara–Arjuna Saṃvāda
स एष पार्थो विक्रान्त: सव्यसाची परंतप: । नायुद्धेन निवर्तेत सर्वैरपि सुरासुरै:,'ये वे ही शत्रुओंको संताप देनेवाले महापराक्रमी सव्यसाची अर्जुन हैं, जो (सामना होनेपर) सम्पूर्ण देवताओं तथा असुरोंके साथ भी बिना युद्ध किये पीछे नहीं लौट सकते
sa eṣa pārtho vikrāntaḥ savyasācī paraṃtapaḥ | nāyuddhena nivarteta sarvair api surāsuraiḥ ||
Sinabi ni Vaiśampāyana: “Ito ang Pārtha—si Arjuna na magiting, ang Savyasācī na bihasa sa pana gamit ang dalawang kamay, tagasunog ng mga kaaway. Kahit harapin pa siya ng lahat ng mga diyos at mga asura nang sabay, hindi siya tatalikod nang hindi nakikipaglaban.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the kṣatriya ideal of steadfastness: a true warrior does not withdraw from a legitimate challenge without facing it. Arjuna is presented as the exemplar of disciplined courage and commitment to duty, even against overwhelming opposition.
Vaiśampāyana identifies and praises Arjuna (Pārtha) by his epithets—vikrānta, savyasācī, paraṃtapa—emphasizing that he would not retreat without fighting, even if opposed by all gods and asuras. It functions as a characterization of Arjuna’s formidable nature within the Virāṭa-parvan context.
